Loch Tay Disc Golf Course at Highland Lodges,  Killin, Scotland
Disc Golf is a word of mouth sport, there is very little that can be done about this fact. What attracts people to our sport and keeps them coming back whether for a good laugh or a little competition are the friends that first introduced them. Not unlike many activities disc golf is a social sport and will always find its niche in the community because its so cheap to play and relatively easy to learn. Who would have guessed while getting my chainsaw repaired in Haddington I would be told about a new course in the hills overlooking Loch Tay in the Highlands. We had to see it for ourselves.
We rolled into Highland Lodges on Saturday afternoon and needless to say I was very excited to get my discs flying seeing three baskets in view on the drive to reception. This course was set up in July at the request of the resort owner by the Head Groundskeeper, who luckily is an avid and passionate golfer. They have 9 Lightning DB-5 baskets located on well groomed rolling (mostly off camber) fairways. He aptly chose the color white for the tee signs as I feel this is an excellent example of a Pdga White Course design. This is a very fun course with the prevailing winds and rolling hills keeping you alert to the challenge at hand, Most of the holes are over 270' with lots of OB fences and roads to keep you honest and in control.  A few of the holes slowly slope away from the Tee in an off camber fashion to the basket with some tricky approach shots mixed in for good measure. Essentially the groundskeeper has done a superb job hiding a technically challenging course in what looks like a wide open design.
Throughout my time on the course there were plenty of other groups joining in the fun and playing disc golf. Most of which were first time players, drawn in by the curiosity of the baskets.
As the sun set I was chased down by my daughter to come in for dinner as Mrs ReBoot had cooked up a feast in our luxury cabin and it was time to call it a day. After dinner we  lit a fire and spent the night looking at the stars over Loch Tay and getting to know the folks in the surrounding Wigwams and cabins. What a great place to get away, they really have done it right.
The next day I was able to rise early and to the delight of the family play 18 holes before breakfast. As the course was only a few meters from my front door. It was stunning, the mist rising over the Loch the only sounds were morning birds and rattling chains. It was a wonderful way to spend the weekend and I highly recommend it.
Highland Lodges at Loch Tay is scheduled to be on the Quaich Tour of Scotland #9 in September 2015 but you don't have to wait that long before rattling the chains by the Loch.
